We have been concerned about scented candles for many years.  We've tried to keep in mind buying candles that were "essential oil" only, but your article clearly raises that concern again.  We've been guilty of falling for a special scent at times too.  Now I'm wondering about the "Air Wick" plugin things that are supposedly "essential oil" only, as they're marked that way differently from the originals?  Sheeesh....so many things to be concerned with, but I'll research that now too.

I will go through my candles as breathing in those chemicals are really dangerous and worse if you have autoimmune challenges or breathing issues. 

I like this trick to deodorize the air.  I've used vinegar to mop with and have added essential oils to mask that vinegar smell.  Does a great job cleaning that way.
