If you mix vinegar and bleach, you get chlorine gas, right?  Then why does this article recommend using vinegar in a bowl in your dishwasher for spot free dishes?

White vinegar can be used as a rinse aid in the dishwasher, especially to combat hard water staining.

So, here is what the experts say:

    https://sciencenotes.org/mixing-bleach-and-vinegar-heres-what-happens/

When you mix bleach and vinegar, the bleach reacts with acetic acid in vinegar to produce toxic chlorine gas.

....and to bring this point all in.........

Mixing bleach and vinegar is not safe. Bleach reacts with the acetic acid in vinegar to produce toxic chlorine gas. Chlorine is a yellowish-green gas that attacks mucous membranes and the respiratory system and can be potentially fatal.

I used to manage properties in the last century.  One of my employees decided to mix vinegar and chlorine bleach to speed up the cleaning process in a bathtub.  Needless to say, he made such a sufficient amount of chlorine gas that he had to go to the hospital.  Mixing chemicals is not only dangerous but can be fatal.

*Disclaimer, this was not done by my recommendation, he did this on his own.  We were all glad he was okay though.

Also, I'm guilty of using vinegar in a dishwasher, as this was an old dishwasher, however, it was noted by my dd that there was a strong chlorine smell coming from the dishwasher when it was running.  My dishes were clean, however, no telling how much noxious chlorine gas was made?

I thought it was bleach and ammonia that makes toxic gas?

Yesssss, great point....a wicked deadly mix of two chemicals.  I forgot about the ammonia and bleach mix because I don't use ammonia.

Mixing ammonia and bleach is not safe and can be life-threatening depending on the amounts you use. It causes the release of chloramine gas, which is poisonous.

Yeah I still remember back when you use to use vinegar in the dishwasher :p Vinegar is fine so long as your dishwasher detergent doesn't contain the certain compounds vinegar can't mix with though. Usually the more natural detergents are more likely to be free of the chemicals you can't mix it with.
